Case in point: these guys took a few of the new Nexus S phones, attached them to a weather balloon with cameras, and then set them adrift into the stratosphere. One of the balloons got as high as 107,000 feet (roughly 20 miles) and the camera actually was recording space. Well, see for yourself:
